Art by Yogi Desai
A Retrospective of the Art of Yogi Amrit Desai
Coming of age in the era of abstract expressionism, the versatility of Amrit Desai’s creative style was his trademark. Born October 16, 1932, in Gujarat, India, his creative life started early when he made clay figures of animals as his mother washed clothes by the river bank. As a teenager, he sketched scenes of his village life and got his first job as a poster designer for a movie theater.
Immigrating to the U.S. in 1960, Amritji continued his art education at the Philadelphia College of Art. As his talent emerged, he was not confined by any one method or any single influence. Nothing defined him; nothing contained him. His short but prolific professional career spans only four years, 1962-66. Despite winning first place awards, being shown in galleries in New York City and Philadelphia, and enjoying brisk sales, Amritji abruptly abandoned the promise of his artistic pursuits to dedicate his life to the inner journey, the discovery of the true Self through yoga, and sharing his wisdom with countless others over the past half century.
All artwork belongs to the private collection of his son, Malay A. Desai.
